Well-researched and footnoted, these sections never feel disconnected from the more personal sections. They weren’t hard to find, but I would have appreciated, if publishing them in the book is too costly, a small collection on the publisher’s web site. Endangered. Extinction. Conservation.

A little bit of research when I got home unraveled the ways of publishers here and in Great Britain. Do not buy these books, unless you are collecting old bird books. The accounts aim for specificity and authority; dates and locations of rarity sightings are given, and research articles on nesting and behavior are cited.

There is a photo of him caring for a White-chinned Sapphire in the book, the only human pictured in Dunn’s 16-page collection of hummingbird photographs, and it is inspiring. I’m surprised that the book doesn’t include images reflecting some of the hummingbird and human history Dunn writes about in such detail.
