Severe fires create snags, they germinate seeds and sprout fungus, and most of all they create food and habitat for insects that in turn feed birds like Black-backed Woodpecker and Olive-sided Flycatcher , and encourage even some generalists like other woodpeckers and wrens. On the whole, people do not value them.

I Remember Elephants

Late last month, while searching for bears , woodpeckers and spirits of Greece, I deliberately avoided checking any news, especially from my home country. But the shocking voice that made the difference and prevented the full protection of elephants was even less expected than the WWF’s stance – the EU vote. And it gave me a hope.

Snow in Costa Rica!

A group of dead but still standing trees… a pecker… an Acorn Woodpecker … one more… and a few more… about ten Acorn Woodpeckers!! Acorn Woodpeckers by Niklas Aronsson. A cove protected from the winds – endemic Volcano Junco and the view over the main crater. I have never seen that many peckers at the same spot.
