In keeping with gamebird tradition, my first experience with grouse wasn’t one of a bird on a branch or something singing from a tree. Wood-warblers lived in those Appalachian forests, many of them!

His art is beloved (if you have owned a Sibley calendar at least once in your life, raise your hand) and his bird expertise is widely respected.
