His passion and compassion for humans is immense, but he appears to have some kind of mental block with nonhuman animals. I suppose speciesism/human exceptionalism is at the heart of the matter. He just doesn't believe that other beings lives might have a purpose all their own that is entirely unrelated to humans.

On Compassionate Carnivores and Betrayal

Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. There's no "compassion" in the process. No one needs to eat sentient beings, so it's not as if these "farmers" are providing a valuable service to humanity. It's cruel. No argument here.

Mr. Kristof is attuned to issues of human suffering and injustice. I look forward to casting my vote for compassion. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen any time soon.

You can designate it thus; you can legally call it a Rhode Island Red chicken if you want, but no whooping crane on this planet is nonessential. All of them had successfully learned the skills we taught them to forage in “safe&# areas and avoid humans. It flies on. Not when we have but 400 to spare. I think not!

We give them human names and provide them with the same amenities we enjoy as humans. The "problem with this view" that arises is that it is entirely logical to broaden one's circle of compassion beyond "pets" and to other sentient nonhumans, and Scott doesn't like that logic because it conflicts with his profit motive and his palate.
