On "Compassion," "Nonviolence" and "Justice"

Animal Person

Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Compassion" has been so diluted that most people don't bat an eyelash at the idea of " compassionate carnivores." Furthermore, there's the notion that though you're not for violence, you recognize that the most significant vehicle for the liberation of nonhuman animals, just like the liberation of human animals, probably isn't going to be a petition. Why all the quotation marks?

Of course, this is the military, so why should they be any better than humanity in general?) It is their belief, he said, that rendering most of the feral cats sexually inactive will humanely decrease their numbers. ‘‘The Feral cats may be an animal problem, but there is a human solution. Quantico Military Base is really behaving cruelly when it comes to the feral cats on its base. They've prohibited feeding and want the animals trapped.

Quote of the Week

Critter News

True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace. We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Albert Schweitzer.

More Clarity About Family Farms

Animal Person

The marketing of an operation of breeding and slaughtering sentient nonhumans as a family farm (here, Bell straddles the line) is supposed to trigger some kind of compassion for the humans. In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestation crates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. I won't get into whether I find that to be a victory.

The reason we need to save the gorillas and their habitats (it's a book on gorilla "conservation") is--and this is from memory so there could be more--that gorillas have thumbs, just like humans do. Meanwhile, gorillas don't live in a traditional human family structure of mom, dad and kids, but somehow their family structure is an important reason for us to save them. When it comes to believers, I agree with Phelps that all religious traditions have some kind of basis for mercy or compassion or relieving suffering that we can use in our advocacy. On the Psychological Continuum

Animal Person

And human psychology says that humans are far more social than rational creatures. And that means for the animal rights movement: Social entities like compassion, empathy and suffering are very important factors to motivate humans to change their behaviour. One of the most important aspects determining human behaviour is their social environment. Humans want to be well integrated into their society and live in harmony with it.

Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. There's no "compassion" in the process. No one needs to eat sentient beings, so it's not as if these "farmers" are providing a valuable service to humanity. It allows you to swoop in with an alternative to the disgraceful human behavior that is factory farming and provide a kindler, gentler way to partake of the flesh of others.

Juluri's focus on animals used to entertain humans is intentional and speaks to the legal battle he refers to. It certainly doesn't fill me with confidence in these people's skills in compassion and humane care. Well, kind of. It wasn't a full-fledged tour, but disturbing nonetheless. I can't really talk about what I do except that I work in government. In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. They did not experiment on primates (I asked!), but did experiment on mice and guinea pigs.

In an incredible juxtaposition to the fanfare of Barbaro, more than 100,000 horses were slaughtered last year in the United States and shipped to Europe and Japan for human consumption. To the Editor: An addendum should be made to your editorial ’s point that all horses deserve the “generosity of conscience” that was expended to save Barbaro.

By comparing the common mind-set that has produced both the past injustices against humans and the current abuses of animals, we can and do inspire debate and convince many people that it is a human obligation to speak out against injustice to all beings. Animal suffering and human suffering are undeniably interconnected. It should come as no surprise that a facility that profits from tormenting and killing animals would also oppress and abuse humans.

Common-sense, rational reforms reflect the emerging consensus of mainstream animal protection groups like the Humane Society of the United States and millions of Americans who care about animals. We need not wait for the resolution of the big-picture theoretical debates to come together to ensure that all animals receive more decent and humane treatment, as they deserve. Suffering is far from a uniquely human experience. To the Editor: “ What’s Next in the Law?

We pay lip service to more humane treatment of the animals that we eat, but how many of us look beyond the label on the package of chicken cutlets? Mr. Kristof is attuned to issues of human suffering and injustice. Kristof wants animals to be raised for human consumption in the kind and generous manner of his boyhood farm, a way that certainly seems nicer to the animals than mean ol’ modern industrial-style farming. I look forward to casting my vote for compassion.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

Children naturally love animals, but the many “uses we have found for them” lead us to teach our children to save their compassion for companion animals exclusively. There is no happy ending for even the most humanely raised animal. If domesticated animals “exist only because of the uses we have found for them,” let me ask you: Would you have recommended 150 years ago that we preserve and treasure the bond between whites and their black slaves—and develop a more humane slave trade?

Prima Facie vs. Ultima Facie Wrongness

Animal Ethics

He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely). Problem #1 Let us temporarily assume for the sake of argument that it would be permissible to eat the flesh of an animal who was raised humanely and killed entirely painlessly.
