The Parakeet of City Streets, the Monk Parakeet

According to a December 1970 article in the New York Times , there was a flock of 9 to 12 birds in Fort Tilden. Other areas of New York City where the parakeets were seen in 1970 included the upper East side of Manhattan, Great Kills, Staten Island, Ellis Island and the area around the Statue of Liberty.

Though it is certainly bad news that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service expects sea levels to rise due to global warming, swamping beaches on which Snowy Plovers currently nest, it is good news that the number of beaches proposed for protection as Snowy Plover nesting habitat has doubled. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.
