The Humane Society of the United States is the big bully on this strange playground. The HSUS isn't even anti-hunting !

To the Editor: As sponsors of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act , we take issue with Christa Weil’s views on the horsemeat industry ( Op-Ed , March 5). The horse slaughter industry in the United States has nothing to do with feeding hungry people and everything to do with animal cruelty.

It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve. In order to produce one pound of beef, cattle eat approximately sixteen pounds of grain; and in order to produce six pounds of pork or ham, hogs eat approximately six pounds of grain. Nobody wants existing animals to be slaughtered.

Regardless of what we choose to eat, doing so will reduce our dietary carbon footprint by half because “about half of the food produced in the United States is thrown away.” Yet the turkey she raises is a much smaller factor in advancing global warming than the cattle on her ranch because they produce meat much more efficiently.

The proposition outlaws raising pregnant sows in gestation crates and raising calves in veal crates , making Arizona the first state in the Union to ban veal crates. September 7, 2006, a bill banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption( H.R. News flash: Slaughtering horses does not promote their welfare.

Feeding grain to chickens, pigs and cows is even more inefficient, with 70 percent of grain grown in the United States going to animals raised for food. Besides depleting the ocean’s supply of fish for those animals normally feeding on them, the factory farming of cattle, pigs and chickens uses excessive water and pollutes our land.
