Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. The vocal seedeaters remain prized possessions for many rural citizens here, some have heavy price tags around their necks; unfortunately confining them to a lifetime of incarceration.

In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency charged Wildlife Services for its illegal placement of a sodium cyanide M-44 (a highly lethal booby trap) on public land, which harmed a U.S. Tags: fish and wildlife USDA. The aerial gunning program has killed at least 10 agents and injured 28 more.

The reasons that these ten have been selected is to illustrate some of the myriad reasons that Africa’s birds are being driven to extinction; from commercial overfishing, powerline collisions, illegal trade, poisoning, traditional medicine usage, overgrazing and conversion of specialized habitats into agricultural land.
