Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Both are direct results of the pet trade. The two Old World species mentioned here were imported and sold as pets – but were often released as neither species were competent singers.

In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency charged Wildlife Services for its illegal placement of a sodium cyanide M-44 (a highly lethal booby trap) on public land, which harmed a U.S. Tags: fish and wildlife USDA. The aerial gunning program has killed at least 10 agents and injured 28 more.
