The species that calls western Montana home is the black cottonwood, while plains and narrowleaf cottonwood call the rest of the state home. Humans have not helped. The result is a slow retreat of the cottonwoods, not readily noticed by a human with a human lifespan and attention-span unless we know what to look for.

Unlike Barred Owls they were accompanied by no great controversy , and unlike Cattle Egrets or Eurasian Collared Doves they didn’t come as an abrupt continent-hopping surprise. There’s a certain suburbanization of the natural as well as the human world. 1978, for reference, was the year of my birth.

They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. Meanwhile, a birder from Montana who happened to be watching the Magnificent Pirate next to me, was shouting the magic words, “Life Bird!” Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian.

It wasn’t until I noticed the “locusts” here in Montana that I got curious about them. Human-created habitats like road edges, pastures, and railroad right-of-ways suit them to a tee, so it hardly seems fair to call them the locusts when we are the ones who have expanded explosively and stripped the land bare.
