Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds.

Thus, the cattle we raise for meat and dairy are sometimes called Bos taurus while the extinct wild form is always called Bos primigenius. Smith Oaks is a migratory bird sanctuary owned and maintained by Houston Audubon, and the Rookery is a year-round bonus, full of Spoonbills, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Neotropical Cormorants, Anhingas, Tricolored Herons and Black-crowned Night-Herons. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. It was amazing.

Thankfully it did not last long and then brought some surprising birding opportunities that we normally only experience in our Wet Season. Of significance were the large number of White-necked Herons , which had taken to balancing on fence-lines, gates and any raised growth due to the flooded land. Brown Falcon. Australian Hobby.
