It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. They’re all named for livestock. The genus Bucephala includes three familiar ducks with big heads. Wicked, right?

Song Sparrow is a genuine rarity in Miami-Dade. This Lincoln’s Sparrow is far more common. A La Sagra’s Flycatcher, a Caribbean stray, continued at Charles Deering Estate. Cattle Egret: 133. Clay-colored Sparrow: 1. Savannah Sparrow: 56. Grasshopper Sparrow: 25. Lincoln’s Sparrow: 3.

We remember starlings not skylarks, House Sparrows not Eurasian Tree Sparrows , Cattle Egrets not… well, whatever we’ve forgotten because it didn’t do as well as the Cattle Egrets. It’s just that the exceptions are so much more attention-grabbing. So, tentatively, welcome spring and new life.

The primary reasons for the decline of macaws and parrots are many but habitat loss due to logging; clear cutting for crops and cattle ranching; and capture for the pet trade rank among the most threatening. These threats are further exacerbated by the naturally low reproductive rates of these cavity-nesting birds. Wicked, right?

” White-tailed Deer have been introduced but no one in our group picked up any ticks. Cattle Egrets were easily found in any open areas, particularly around the airport and the eastern end of the island. And, of course, there were House Sparrows in town but I didn’t see a single starling the entire time!
