Found apple in winter cat shelter?

I found a full intact apple today hidden in my winter cat shelter. My neighbours grow crab apples and it looks like a creature had hidden its snack in the shelter. I was thinking a raccoon but then read that they don't store food? I'm hoping there's some animal experts here!
