People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!). The four counts of burglary he is being charged with carry a heftier sentence than the animal killing.

If you don't have to enslave, rape, dominate, or kill someone (or have someone else do it for you), why would you? Why choose enslavement, rape, domination and slaughter? Sometimes an article has a couple of the above, as in the case of " Chinese Legal Experts Call for a Ban on Eating Cats and Dogs." What do you think?

When in the position of having the choice, which so far is always, I'd rather choose not to have someone killed for me. And I want Baby Sky to grow up in a home where there is just as much respect for chickens and calves and fishes as there is for greyhounds and cats and people. But they always have their desire to not be killed.

He's right with his implication that stopping the seizing of pets and strays simply created a more efficient, effective means of commodifying and torturing dogs and cats. Engber writes of experimenting on cats and on the "furtive language" vivisectionists use to decrease the emotional impact of what they do. Maybe on paper.

Those who harvest are unfortunately myopic, seeing only the instant gratification of the meal or the kill. Those that are out to kill this species for their own pleasure.
