If you don't have to enslave, rape, dominate, or kill someone (or have someone else do it for you), why would you? Sometimes an article has a couple of the above, as in the case of " Chinese Legal Experts Call for a Ban on Eating Cats and Dogs." It sounds like it might not even help cats and dogs in a meaningful way.

There is a rational, and for some people a spiritual, case for being a vegetarian: Killing animals is wrong. Well, Copenhagen Zoo is back in the news; a few weeks after killing a giraffe and feeding it to some lions, it went and killed some of those same lions. If the whole thing passed you by then Mother Jones did a good piece on why zoos sometimes have to kill individuals for the good of the species.

The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. Little boys kill thousands of birds each year with slingshots. Millions die each year that are hit by cars, crash into windows, wind turbine blades or at the paws of domestic cats. Other birds are purposefully poisoned because they are agricultural pests.

Like Vick, most of us shamelessly abuse and kill animals. In university labs nationwide, scientists inflict spinal-cord injuries on dogs and cats, inject rats with carcinogens, test dangerous drugs on monkeys, and do all kinds of evil things to guinea pigs in the name of scientific research.
