Just as the ranger was telling us that we might see wild cats – well, not wild cats, but rather, Wildcats , the wild version of the domestic cat, Felis silvestris lybica , one of those cats popped its head out of the brush about 50 feet beyond her. The most interesting thing about this cat was lack of kitty-cat-ness.

The Hawaiian Crows face much more destructive threats–extreme loss of habitat; malaria, the scourge of so many Hawaiian species; predators–rodents, cats and the ‘Io, the Hawaiian Hawk. Coyotes took carrion from young Condors and then killed the weakest ones. This is the most intense, tragic section.

For instance, assume (and I will NOT stand by this number, it is just one I’ve heard here and there) that kitty cats in America kill 50,000,000 birds a year. Hardly any Sandhill Cranes are killed by domestic (including ferrel domestic) cats. In fact, there are certainly a few cats killed by hawks every year. Raptors either.

In California, coveys break up and pairs begin forming in February or March, followed by nest building and egg laying in May or June. Maureen Eiger categorizes any unidentifiable featherless nestlings as “ Tufted Puffins ;” to Letitia Labbie, they’re “Eggs With Legs.”. Hit by car, HBC; caught by cat, CBC; window strike, WS. Coyote bombs with sizzling wicks, so even at my sleepiest one glance at her chart would snap me into “en garde.”

They need another day or two to figure out how to use the flappy things on the sides of their body and yeah for a week they are going to be awkward in their movements and very vulnerable to predation (especially cats, keep them indoors) but this adults hang out and watch them.
