Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. They believe you can take a life that doesn't want to be taken in a humane way, and I don't agree. Interestingly, the campaigns of happy meaters are acknowledged for perhaps being somewhat of a scam with the next sentence.

If you believe your dog has a right to a life free of torture and slaughter for no reason, then you really ought to think about extending that right to mice, rats, chickens and fish. So there are more vegans and fewer animals used by humans, right? But I don't want to talk about PeTA. But that's not the telling item.

The horrific practice in China of skinning cats and dogs alive for their fur must go down as one of the worst cases of sustained mass cruelty to animals in human history. Every year, more than 2,000,000 cats and dogs are skinned alive in China for their fur. The horror must be stopped. Please help. Now is the time for action.

We "traditionally" have applied our social mores in some places and not others, and we should go back to "tradition," which I bet has something to do with continuing to care about our dogs while continuing to feign care for "farm animals," as they're value is as food only. Let the games begin. What's all this about emotion, anyway?
