The California Quail ( Callipepla californica ) is the California state bird, inhabiting scrub, broken chaparral and woodland edges primarily in California, Oregon, Washington and Baja California. She will usually lay 12 to 17 eggs, averaging five per week 1 , before beginning incubation.

They bred on a number of islands near Japan and Taiwan, and ranged widely and abundantly from the Aleutian Islands south through California. According to the California Bird Police, they are now annual in California waters, but the easiest place to see them in the U.S. is on a boat in the Aleutian chain.
