Visiting Storm King Art Center

The sun was shining, the grounds are beautiful, and I know a little bit more about art now so I could appreciate what we were looking at as something other than a jungle gym, though I was still sorely tempted to see if I could still climb those giant orange doohickeys. We also observed some evidence of other species breeding.

Here in Colorado many species are affected, but perhaps none more than our beautiful Mountain Plovers and Ferruginous Hawks. They often build their nests in open savannas where it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Thank a lemming

They breed up here, and spend their winters (usually) in the lower reaches of the Arctic and near polynyas (year round ice free waters) such as the North Water Polynya between Ellesmere Island and Groenland. They are able to breed at the age of 5-6 weeks so it is easy to see, given the right conditions how quickly their population can grow.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another. The big white one. It flies on.
