Cliff Swallows migrate to North America from their wintering grounds in South America to nest in large colonies, sometimes numbering in the thousands. This map shows the distribution of the World’s bird species, based on overlying the breeding and wintering ranges of all known species. Which leaves me with quite a few choices – practically the entire tropical belt, right? It makes me think what is the meaning of life, the universe and everything? Why am I here?

I was fortunate enough to spot the individual in this post at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where it was foraging in bushes and small trees between four and fifteen off of the ground. It breeds across Canada’s boreal forest and most winter in the Caribbean, though some spend the cold months in Central America.

These are listed in a table, which also specifies slope and geographic region (but not country).

Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans. Often, as I have been investigating the contents of a nest by making a small hole in the side, the parent birds have come right to the nest, where they immediately begin to repair the damage even before my departure!”.
