The focus on Malheur is and was appropriate, but we should not lose sight of the significance of the entire National Wildlife Refuge System. The combination is potent.

A few breed on the main Hawaiian islands, including Kilauea Point NWR on Kauai. Most of the key breeding locations in the U.S.

We got off the ferry and, seeing as we only had about half-an-hour to drive before we were at our hotel, we decided to explore a bit at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. This is the third year that my family and some our close friends did a vacation together.

But one man was listening to the calls of the whistle blowers -- calls of widespread wetland destruction, poaching, pesticides and destructive feral wildlife. They are also the rarest.
