The best season for the north-west circuit is February to May, during the rains when most birds breed. The best timing is during the rains, April-May and October-November, when birds breed. The furry kind is represented with 95 species – more than in any other Ugandan park, 10 primates among them, including the Chimpanzee.

In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? Many sanctuaries do not permit breeding. The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. Finally, what of the audience?

Within Nariva Swamp is Bush Bush Wildlife Sanctuary, a sandy, low-lying peninsula populated by palms, strangler figs, and other hardy forest trees. On Bush Bush, the main attraction is undoubtedly the pair of native primate species: Red Howler and (Trinidad) White-fronted Capuchin, the latter being critically endangered.

Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. However they will not and cannot breed, and once these individual’s natural lifespans are over, these bird populations will be lost forever.
