Perhaps because of threats to the ecosystems of the many places the Arctic Tern visits (Europe, Africa, South America, and North America), it may be on the decline. Some of those once-popular breeding spots now produce no chicks at all.

And, in South America, there is at least one species that is being heavily preyed on by North American Minks which are not supposed to be in South America. Their natural range is in a smallish region of southern South America. Some of the lakes they breed on have been stocked with salmon and trout.

Although they were not there in late September, I now know where Whimbrels, Surfbirds, and Wandering Tatlers breed. These are birds I regularly see in tropical regions as non-breeding visitors. We are told the scenic beauty of Alaska is only rivaled by that of the Patagonian and Antartic region in extreme South America.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites).
