Because, as this book demonstrates so well, it is sometimes important to look back in order to move forward. This is a project that clearly spanned decades.

Great White Pelican is not just the name of a non-existent glam-rock band but also of a bird species. Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos. They probably did not even have Twitter then.

Erika is a first year graduate student studying Ecosystem Science and Conservation at Duke. The park is home to not one, not two, but large three colonies of breeding seabirds: the Brown Noddy , Magnificent Frigatebird , and Sooty Tern. Lots and lots of birds. It was for the birds that we made this journey in the first place.
