With their strong flight and capability to disperse, parrots have managed to colonize almost every major island group from Tahiti to Mauritius to Dominica. There seems to be a parrot for almost any ecological situation. I am a self-proclaimed psittacophile.

In Costa Rica, the sole tropical breeding albatross is a rare visitor to pelagic waters of the Pacific. A more surefire way to witness this long-winged bird is by visiting breeding grounds on the Galapago Islands. Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata). Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata).

However, there are those species which have a hard time bringing attention to themselves such as Yellow-shouldered Blackbird , Giant Nuthatch , and Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. Other endangered and vulnerable species we observed at this preserve included Red-browed Parrot , Ochre-marked Parakeet , and White-necked Hawk.

But birds have a certain amount of flexibility buil in as well, which is very apparent in some of the smarter birds, like crows and parrots, but can still be present in other birds too. At the top, we rounded a corner and found not only the sun in all its glory, but Orange-winged Parrots and what seemed to be an ever-increasing number of Guianan Trogons. Both Plumbeous Kite and Fork-tailed Flycatcher are present for the southern winter, the former breeds here, the latter tends to bring their young with them.
