The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? In my opinion, neither Harambe nor the child should ever have been at the zoo.

The species in fact used to occur across New Zealand, but declined quickly with the arrival of introduced mammals. The Shore Plovers did well on the island, breeding a year after arriving (unexpected quickly as it turned out). By 1888 it was extinct in the mainland of New Zealand, and declining in the Chathams.

But you can take solace in the results at the end of the breeding year, when loafing around the intertidal are a shiny new cohort of finely plumage grey youngsters, all ready to carry on Western Gull line into the future. This is quite a big deal for an island group that had no mammals save bats for millions of years.

Photo copyright The Smithsonian’s National Zoo, taken from the Guam Rail page. . It persists in captivity at a breeding facility on Guam and in a number of American zoos. Notwithstanding any successes we may have breeding Guam Rails in captivity we are unlikely to be successful in addressing the reason for its decline.

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. Or the destruction of the forests, food source and breeding grounds. We have a lot of source material. It wasn’t just the mass killings in so many ways.

Strangely, the photo accompanying the Wikipedia entry on Collared Finchbills , Asian birds, was taken at Cincinnati zoo. I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a Bald Eagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June.
