As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. At night we had planned to go out looking for Blue Penguins , around 600 of which make the island their breeding home.

Not to mention, its brilliantly bulbous crimson throat, bloated during breeding season must be a sight! Jean Loscalzo is a penguin buff (Can you blame her?) and would love to watch Rockhopper Penguins. The wings on the male are remarkably shaped plus I’ve always had an peculiar interest in the nightjar family.

Why this one city alone would be named for birds, in this country of 1,800 species, is unclear, but it could very well be a designation inspired by the nearby Islas Ballestas, an uninhabited island group just offshore from Pisco and home to enormous breeding colonies of Humboldt Penguins , Inca Terns , Peruvian Boobies , and many other species.
