Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos. On this trip, this forced me to participate in a side trip to the nearby Tembe Elephant Park.

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. In November 2008, a virus killed a 15-month-old Asian elephant calf named Malti. I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties.

The Natal Spurfowl forages on rhinoceros and elephant dung (HBW) and does so without complaining. Each of these ‘families’ consists of a single mating pair and 1-5 ‘helpers’ who assist in raising the young. And I do not even want to think about which part of an old man’s anatomy the throat pouch reminds me of.

In 1856 Wahlberg was killed by an Elephant near Lake Ngami in Botswana without ever publishing an account of his travels, but fellow Swede Carl Sundevall catalogued his collection at the Stockholm Museum and described the birds Wahlberg collected. In 1964, Clancey’s “Birds of Natal and Zululand” raised the total to 590.

Then a little later there was a spot of bother with DDT, but we pulled out of that one ok, with a toolbox that would surely stand us in good stead if we only had the will to use it – legislation and literature, captive breeding programs, nest platforms. We could do it! Then the 80s happened. Good times, I tell you what.
