This map shows the distribution of the World’s bird species, based on overlying the breeding and wintering ranges of all known species. And it raises a question: if all the birds are having a party over there, am I in the wrong spot? Ecuador (1590 / 1641). Why am I here? And where all those birds are? Uganda (987 / 1083).

As is often the case in birds, teenagers, and other living creatures, these charismatic colors play a prominent role in the booby’s breeding rituals. However, Sula nebouxii is most closely associated with Ecuador’s evocative Galápagos Islands. Basically, lady boobies love knocking the brightest blue boots.

We were in the remote Amazonian forests and not a sound was to be heard except for the rhythmical dripping of water from the raised paddles. For example nothing is known of its breeding habits, any accounts of its diet (it is assumed to feed on insects and other arthropods), ways of foraging and movement (presumed resident) are wanting.

Like a shy stepchild, it’s always eclipsed by the wonders of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, etc. The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Baird’s Sparrow by Seagull Steve Julie’s was not a wild bird, well, at least not one that lived outdoors: My Best Bird of the Year, and the 22 preceding, was Charlie, a Chestnut-fronted Macaw I got as a captive-raised fledgling in 1989. She made a fool of me when I first met her, and again when she left me.

A Guan was collected in 1876 in a mangrove forest near the border between Peru and Ecuador. A captive breeding program was established with a facility at Gustavo del Solar’s property, not far from where the birds were re-discovered. This flock is composed of about 54 birds including nine breeding pair.
