The Bar-tailed Godwits had developed their breeding plumage and were roosting on a small rock close to the island. Grey Plover and Bar-tailed Godwit in breeding plumage. We encountered a Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying through the area, which kindly landed in a tree and allowed for photography! Grey-headed Fish Eagle.

In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. You can see why here. It very effectively forms a small foraging group in this manner.

Marlgu Billabong at the end of the dry season

Zebra Finch , Star Finch , Double-barred Finch , Masked Finch , Pictorella Mannikins , Peaceful Doves , Diamond Doves , Bar-shouldered Doves and Crested Pigeons were constantly dropping to the water’s edge to drink. There were several Black-tailed Godwits that had returned from their migration to the northern hemisphere to breed.

Grey-headed Lapwing in Australia

The Grey-headed Lapwing- Vanellus cinereus breeds in north-east China and Japan between April and June and then migrate to spend the winter in northern Southeast Asia from northeastern India to Cambodia and southern Japan. We don’t “twitch” birds, but it would be a bird to look out for during our visit.
