The Kirtland’s Warbler is an endangered bird species that breeds primarily in the jack pine forests of northern Michigan. Specifically, the warbler’s primary breeding range is concentrated in a few counties in the northern Lower Peninsula and the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Where should I go?

Such programs are somewhat inefficient anyway – in one study , the breeding success of wild male pheasants was 2-5 times higher than for hand-reared and released ones while for females, hand-reared birds were 3 times as vulnerable to predation as the wild ones.

Incidents include a hippo who died in transport from Denver and a Turkmenian markhor, a species of wild goat, hung itself at the zoo after becoming trapped by a rope. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. The fatality is one in a string of animal deaths in recent years.

Our outing on January 7th was based around chasing this winter adult male Long-tailed Duck at City Lake in the middle of Denver, CO. The ponds around the Denver Natural History Museum are visitor and birding friendly. Bill Schmoker captured the best of our shots using the variable focal length of 500mm-1750mm.

Although most conservation research focuses on northern breeding grounds, many ABA Area birds spend most of the year elsewhere. The Puerto Rican Parrot and its captive-breeding program has been extensively studied, as has the Pearly-eyed Thrasher, among others. The Puerto Rican Vireo is declining. Fish & Wildlife Service.

It goes without saying that our three breeding species of mergansers in the United States are amongst the most brilliantly colored birds we have. Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. They don’t breed here, but winter strictly on the Front Range.
