Sadly, they no longer breed in Algeria, while in Turkey no free-flying birds remain. (In Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. In 1890 an estimated 3,000 pairs nested in Birecik.)

The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period). And of course, I would have been wrong.

Notwithstanding any successes we may have breeding Guam Rails in captivity we are unlikely to be successful in addressing the reason for its decline.

In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.

Several European zoos had this species in their collections at the time, but they either made no effort to breed it or it did not breed well in captivity. It is correct, of course, to think of extinction this way during the Holocene Extinction, which we are living through right now. … Extinction is forever.

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. Or the destruction of the forests, food source and breeding grounds. We have a lot of source material. It wasn’t just the mass killings in so many ways. What a horror!

For some reason, even though there are Mandarin Ducks in zoos throughout New York City, this escapee has become an internationally known tourist attraction, even heading the New York Times list of “Five Times the Internet Was Actually Fun in 2018.” It has always been a difficult bird to find, even when abundant. ” [[link].
