Take that same stroll in southern Brazil or other places and extinction is acres of burned rainforest, a walk through plastic decorated neighborhoods devoid of insects, massive forest fires, die-offs of animals, and millions of shellfish being cooked alive , in situ. Two are pelagic species, two are resident, and the other one is a mystery.

As I said last week , I’ve decided to try and knock off a few of the New Zealand endemics and specialities that I haven’t seen before over the coming year, and the first place that sprung to mind was pretty close, just across the Cook Strait in the Marlborough Sounds. I didn’t see one, probably.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. The first to cruise past in a hurry were the stunning Cook’s Petrels. The Grey-faced Petrel has all dark plumage with a lighter area around the face.

The fish owl is an endangered species, and before Slaght’s work, very little was known about it, especially in Russia. (It It is also native to Japan, where it is protected and protectively studied to the point where Slaght had trouble getting any information.). So, Blakiston’s Fish Owl it was.

Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. What makes Ghana so special?
