Breeding plumage in Bar-tailed Godwits in February

It does not seem that long since the shorebirds all returned from their northerly migration and already we are starting to see the change in their breeding plumage. The shorebirds will start to leave Broome next month to breed high up in the Arctic and will mostly fly non-stop to the Yellow Sea in China.

We have recorded shorebirds in Broome that have been marked in this way in Hong Kong, Bohai Bay in China, a nature reserve near Shanghai, Japan and various other locations. This time it was stood amongst the Greater Sand Plovers and one Lesser Sand Plover that still had breeding plumage and several Red-necked Stint.

China is developing very fast, and Shanghai is developing even faster. It sometimes makes a rather strange croaking noise, a bit as if a dog tries to bark but does not know how to do it properly. The Olive-backed Pipit is a small songbird that in Shanghai can only be seen in winter – in summer, it breeds further north.

In contrast, the Little Egret is mostly quiet, which is a good thing given that it sounds a bit like an asthmatic dog when deciding to be vocal. It looks fairly flashy in its breeding plumage, much less so in winter. It is much more likely to be found in larger flocks, at least outside the breeding season.

One good acquaintance I could probably call a friend is an ethics professor who flies back and forth from Texas to China frequently argued in a group pertaining to bestiality. The guy lured[stole] a dog which did not belong to him, dog taped the dog's mouth shut, tied the dog to a tree, and committed and act of buggery.
