I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. My division director loves Norwegian Forest Cats. The woman still gets teary-eyed over a cat she lost 10 years ago to illness and these animals are like her children.

Start with easier pets – Many people don’t want to start with the responsibility of a dog or cat. Purebred or mixed breed? It is not necessary to pick a purebred dog for your first pet. Try to find out what breeds are in your dogs background to help you better understand your dog’s behavior.

Save the Planet: Adopting a shelter pet not only saves a life, but it reduces demand for purebred animals, which are more likely to have medical problems due to genetic abnormalities. Instead of buying toys, you can delight dogs and cats with stuff you already own.

It’s the result of thousands of years of breeding. Let me tell you – I’ve met some street dogs who curl up with cats and babies, and I’ve met some pet dogs (like my human’s grandmother’s Chihuahua!) Millions of American street dogs (and cats!) That night, I slept well for the first time in my short life.

He's right with his implication that stopping the seizing of pets and strays simply created a more efficient, effective means of commodifying and torturing dogs and cats. Engber writes of experimenting on cats and on the "furtive language" vivisectionists use to decrease the emotional impact of what they do. Maybe on paper.
