It is predominantly a wetland bird and most productive larger wetlands and lakes of Africa will support a population of these large, hulking birds that hang around the shallows searching for fish, waterbird nestlings and anything else remotely edible. They also prey on frogs and crabs.

Pelicans and cormorants breeding at the Mikri often go to the Megali Prespa to fish the cold, deep waters – actually, cormorants to dive for fish and pelicans to wait for the cormorants at the surface to steal their prey. For longest lists, go there in May when migrants are still passing while the local breeders are active and visible.

This spurred her to pursue a career in environmental education and wildlife nature tourism as a park ranger in Texas and as the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail Coordinator with Florida Fish and Wildlife. The cats were eradicated by 1991, which left the mice population to go unchecked.

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. I’m sure regular visitors to this area could tell you more about how the winds and tides affect the migrating birds and when the breeders start to nest.
