Grey-headed Gull Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus poiocephalus In the Bird Sanctuary at Paarl (you will find it described as the Water and Sewage Treatment Facility if you go looking for it on a map) the birds had set up a breeding colony and were mating and preparing nests in one of the ponds there.

The parents now desert the burrow and the chick, leaving it to the harsh realities of life beyond its sanctuary below the ground. It usually waits for a few days before taking the metaphorical plunge, but once it leaves the burrow and flies for the first time, it will not stop until it reaches the waters off Brazil and Argentina.
