Sorry about this perch; these Mud Turtles are taking the sun on a discarded Mexican-made General Popo-brand tire. I saw 57 species in the area, which is pretty good for the church neighborhood. Three species especially stood out. But this year, the map of Mexico is a sea of purple (the color they use to indicate a sighting).

The Urban Birds of Austin, Texas

I didn’t realize how many new species I would see within the city itself! It’s a strange experience looking up from a city street to gaze at birds native to South America; even more ironic considering humans drove the only native parrot/parakeet species, the Carolina Parakeet , to extinction.

The National Audubon Society Birds of North America covers all species seen in mainland United States, Canada and Baja California. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

A Field Guide to the Birds: Giving Field Marks of All Species Found in Eastern North America was published in 1934 by Houghton Mifflin (note–Peterson was 26 years old), after being rejected by four publishers. Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species.

Reintroduction efforts expanded to Arizona in 1996, and later, to the Baja California peninsula in Mexico.

On her return, she was able to bundle up and bring with her, a brand new Nikon lens. I am always very excited to catch up with a Mangrove Warbler … I just hope someday it will become a species all by it’s self. She was visiting Seattle, for her Dad’s successful heart surgery. This makes them a very difficult meal!
