He subsequently leaves for Peru and gets kidnapped and killed by Sendero Luminoso – the local brand of Maoists. Long-toed Lapwing , Ashy Tit , Black-backed Cisticola , Lizard Buzzard , Meyer’s Parrot and Southern Black Tit were just some of my rewards (these were my lifers that day). It’s such a great place for birds.

It’s a strange experience looking up from a city street to gaze at birds native to South America; even more ironic considering humans drove the only native parrot/parakeet species, the Carolina Parakeet , to extinction. Again, they are fairly common in the Southwest and Mexico, but for me they felt brand new!

Sometimes we have good days where we discover a long-lost friend or a brand-new one. These tanagers breed only with each other, eschewing the company of parrots, warblers, and even other groups of tanagers, some of which are really, really beautiful. Every member of this gene pool is recognized as a stripe-headed tanager.
