I bring this up because birding the Chobe River in northern Botswana gave me the interesting opportunity to bird a country I technically wasn’t in. The river cruises up the Chobe River are most famous for the dry season aggregations of African Bush Elephants drawn to the year-round water. It’s arbitrary, but there you go.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

Take an example, Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa. If tourists are too dim to tell Sierra Leone from Botswana or Tanzania, do we really want to rely on them to save Africa’s species? We can’t afford just to let nature be nature any more. Not if we want to hang on to what we have left.

One study found that birds living in Botswana had elevated levels of lead in their bloodstreams during hunting season, presumably coming from lead bullets used on animals killed by hunters. A slightly more surprising threat for the vultures comes from elephants. Elephants destroy the trees the vultures live and nest in.

In my case, I suppose it would be filming the elephants caught in a sandstorm in the Okavango Delta. Linfield: Probably my favorite location was the Okavango Delta in Botswana for two reasons really. Linfield: Yes, and I think, as Alastair says, you were always influenced by the things that you film.

My books weren’t helping much so I had resorted to looking for large green areas on Google Maps on the border of South Africa and Botswana, and I happened on Madikwe. Madikwe has perhaps too many elephants. I had a look at the website and it looked interesting. Leopards are also awesome and I saw two at Madikwe.

A bird drove me nuts in Tembe Elephant Park, as I couldn’t find it on the app. In particular the GPS function didn’t seem to work in Botswana and Zimbabwe (I am, I have to confess, guessing there was a GPS function as it seemed to work in South Africa in areas with no signal. I may be mistaken).
