This is also why you very rarely find a photo of a giraffe on top of one of these posts – the other reason of course being that a giraffe photo would be relatively pointless in a birding blog. I had also not seen any Common Kingfisher for more than 2 months, a situation that is generally being frowned upon by human rights lawyers.

This post is inspired by a thought-provoking piece on the Provoked blog (clearly a good name for a blog!) If a meat eater eats meat, but hates the factory farm system or animal experimentation, do we discount anything we can get out of them because they are not "pure." Economics, science, literature, film, politics, law, etc.

The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. Unfortunately, this goal tends to run counter to humane goals.”

I’m not going to rehash that war here, seeing as how it is a bird blog and not one about foreign policy, but it is perhaps appropriate to note the maelstrom of violence that has been pretty much ongoing since the neocons went in to make everything better. By contrast, not all extractive use is bad.

I'm not one of those people who thinks family is composed of only humans or humans who are biologically related. And they certainly wouldn't hurt anybody; that's what those big factory farms do that aren't owned by families. Yes, factory farms are the stuff of nightmares for nonhuman animals. But so are family farms.
