A group of about 15 Least Sandpipers was feeding in the shallows. We checked out the shrubs for songbirds while returning to the car and were rewarded with a displaying Red-winged Blackbird. The entertainment consisted of a group of 8 Grasshopper Sparrows and Cattle Egret attending to a small herd of – wait for it – cattle.

The Five Valleys Audubon Society is one of the most congenial groups of birders I have ever gone on a field trip with. A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. It was truly a fantastic bird-of-prey day.

The roadmap out of lockdown here in the UK has allowed us to meet up in small groups to indulge in outdoor activities, so birders have been gathering in loose flocks to greet the migrants as they head north.

The biggest surprise is a small group of 4 Snow Buntings, very unusual for the Mediterranean coast but apparently not unheard of in the Camargue. The Pacific is divided through the Behring Strait, leaving St Lawrence and The Aleutian Islands to the east and embracing all the south Pacific island groups into the Australasian Realm. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. Ornate Hawk-Eagle – Spizaetus ornatus. Greater Spotted Eagle – Clanga clanga.
