Actually we couldn’t be seen, as it was still too dark, but we did hear a couple of birds to start the day: Tawny Owl and Cetti’s Warbler. Wren, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Chiffchaff were all noted by 4.30, and we soon managed to add two more tricky species: Stonechat and Willow Warbler.

Tolkien’s The Hobbit , the cantankerous Tawny Owl ( Strix aluco ) Old Brown from the Peter Rabbit tales by Beatrix Potter, and Kehaar, a Black-headed Gull ( Chroicocephalus ridibundus ) who was one of the few non-leporine characters in Watership Down by Richard Adams. I remember the talking (Song?)

All our six endemics have exclusive or partial populations living in forest habitats – exclusive being the Cyprus Jay Garrulus glandarius glazneri , Cyprus Coal Tit Periparus ater cypriotes , Cyprus Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae and Cyprus Scops Owl Otus scops cyprius.

Yellow-billed Magpies are found just inland, and Tricolored Blackbirds can be found on Point Reyes (a legendary migrant trap) by the thousand in the fall. Other forest birds here include Sooty and Ruffed Grouse, Spotted and Barred Owls, Vaux’s Swift, Gray Jay, Pacific Wren, American Dipper, and Varied Thrush. Convict Lake, CA.

In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry. Alpine Accentors, on the other hand, are not cooperative breeders and females typically have very little to do with each other. Wicked, right?

Another Nanhui trip also brought a Northern Boobook , which eBird nicely describes as a “slender brown owl with comically expressive golden eyes” While one would think that such a fierce-looking bird mainly lives off larger prey, this is not the case. It did not seem to bother the owl much though. Oh, the excitement.
