I enjoy collecting children’s books about birds and nature that I come across in the expected (book stores) and unexpected (academic library conference reports) places. The Taínos named the birds Iguacas, after their call. Spanish settlers arrived in 1493 and called the birds Coterras. The birds thrive.

So, while we are in awe of an identification guide that discusses every single field mark of hawks or warblers, we tend to accept without question bird identification guides that aim to teach beginning and intermediate birders how to recognize birds in their backyards, neighborhood parks, and state preserves. There’s Hawk Mountain, Pennsylvania, of course, and that little known Cape May place in New Jersey, not to mention others like Fort Smallwood in Maryland and even Fort Tilden in Queens, New York, which gets some press on the occasions that Corey swings by. I was leading a field trip with a dozen intrepid souls.
