The 26 essays in When Birds Are Near are all about the real-life and emotional spaces where people overlap with birds. The essays range widely in place, bird, and voice, though the emphasis is on the North American.

Everywhere on Facebook I see friends and acquaintance posting photos of Snowy Owls , and or status updates on how they’ve succeeded or failed in their search for reported birds. Now as most everyone knows Snowy Owls are birds of the Arctic. They are a bit of a nemesis bird for me, but only because I’m somewhat lazy.

Backyard Birding in Breckenridge

It’s been nearly three weeks since the family and I left Breckenridge but I’m still thinking about all the birds that we enjoyed from my aunt and uncle’s backyard deck at 10,500 feet above sea level. Cassin’s Finches made me much more familiar with them as they are a bird I have seldom seen.
