Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of November 2021)

A mundane weekend makes for mundane birds, so I had to settle for watching House Sparrows chew through my feeders. Plenty of other species stopped by, of course, but they were sorely outnumbered. So sad, in fact, that Corey decided to honor that pigeon’s memory by making it his Best Bird of the Weekend. How about you?

Pseudonymns for Costa Rican Birds

Some birds are too cool for just one name. Others have names that give us pause because they don’t seem to describe, to convey, what that bird is really all about. And then there are the names that are just too damn long, especially for the size of the bird. Diminutive? More like maybe-an-insect. Nope, an F Bug.

ABA Field Guides to Birds of Colorado and Florida

I was birding one of my favorite places yesterday, Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Palm Beach County, Florida, and, as generally happens, people were asking me about the birds they were admiring. This latest addition to the ABA State Field Guide series is sorely needed in places like Wakodahatchee. “Great Egret.”

15 Years: Things Will Never Be The Same

Hello my birding sons and daughters. Not since the advent of the field guide (thanks Roger) have we seen such rapid change in the world of birding. 1) Rare bird reporting has come a long way. I saw the bird the next day, where it was reported to other birders via text messages, cellular phone calls, and more listserv messages.
