I was in contact with a group of birders for whom I arranged and guided an annual tour to Africa. I must admit that I was astonished as I had never considered Ghana a potential birding destination, nor knew of any birders who had ever been there. We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.

The official definition of CR status says the species could be gone within ten years, or could lose 80 per cent of its population within three generations – whichever comes first. CR being the highest category in the Red List , if I want to see some of those birds, I better hurry! Locals being vegetarians, why are there no birds?

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. More states will doubtless join the queue of those proposing hunts. It flies on.

This is Jason’s first contribution to 10,000 Birds: Birders were rightly alarmed by the armed occupation of the Malheur NWR in Oregon. One of the nation’s premier birding locations had been overrun by an armed militia and the occupation unexpectedly endured for weeks. Individually, many NWRs protect crucial bird habitat.
