These temperatures make for perfect birding/camping weather and because that is one of our favourite pastimes we decided it was time to go and explore a bit more of northern Australia during July. Red Kangaroos often stood in the middle of the single lane bitumen across the north of Australia and were in no rush to move on.

The bird life certainly changes a bit, with a complete lack of water, unless you are at a town, well, or station, as many of the ranches are referred to. Wedge-tailed Eagles roam the skies, along with Brown Falcon, Black Kites , and Nankeen Kestrels. The third bird flew off just before I could get the shutter released.

Most of the birds in the area were well above ground level! Welcome Swallows , Tree Martins and a Wedge-tailed Eagle soared above and we also had Crested Pigeons , which indicated there must be some water present somewhere nearby. Western Grey Kangaroo. It was quite challenging attempting to photograph birds directly overhead!

My trip wasn’t touristy but I was able to sneak off late one afternoon and early one morning to do a bit of woodland birding at a location called Campbell Park. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Campbell Park, Canberra.
