Critically Endangered: Sociable Lapwing

CR being the highest category in the Red List , if I want to see some of those birds, I better hurry! In an open Maruti Gypsy, we are heading north from Dasada in the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, along a rather decent tarmac road, between the wheat fields and passing camel carts. Locals being vegetarians, why are there no birds?

The bird life certainly changes a bit, with a complete lack of water, unless you are at a town, well, or station, as many of the ranches are referred to. I guess this a great reason to come back and find that bird again… we will call that the silver lining in a major screw up. The second half of our week was spent in Sydney.

Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. It is a plant that we grow in our own garden to attract the birds.
