There is a fantastic paper just out in Science : “Sustained miniaturization and anatomoical innovation in the dinosaurian anceestors of birds” by Michael Lee, Andrea Cau, Darren Naishe and Gareth Dyke. Whales emerge from within the larger group of mammals that includes cattle, deer, pigs, camels, with camels being the most deeply rooted.

This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation. One particular bird in our area is at least 24 years old and has maintained the same territory for many years. Every time someone goes near the nest the birds walk off to distract the person and try to lead them away.

It is flat open country as you approach Wolfe Creek Crater and to be perfectly honest we were not expecting to find too much bird-life around due to the complete lack of water other than what would be at cattle troughs. It was actually surprisingly windy and the birds could ride the thermals quite well. Wolfe Creek Crater-dangerous!

Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. Grevillea refracta-bird attracting.
